This South Carolina Republican Shows Us Birther Jokes Are Unfortunately Still A Thing

Anthony Culler, the GOP nominee looking to take on Rep. Jim Clyburn (D-S.C.) in the November midterm elections, can be seen in a video from a February 2013 "Day of Resistance" rally making a birther joke about President Barack Obama.

Culler was discussing background check legislation when he referenced the debate over Obama's birth certificate, which the White House released in April 2011.

"How is it on every single shoot they track back the lineage of that gun better than you can Barack Obama?" Culler said to a laughing crowd.

"This tradition is real simple, laws are passed to make us criminals. If you say, 'I'm not following that, I'm not following it, I will give my children my guns' -- well what they can do is one day if they ever want to target you they can come to you and say, 'Hey, we passed a law -- did you do the background check, did your father, did you?' If you did they will have you, and that is the gotcha on this thing. It's a, it's a Trojan horse."

Culler has also been very colorful on his Facebook page. In one post he wrote that "I am not just PRO-Second Amendment, I am closer to a GUN NUT!"

He also once posted that "Jim Clyburn knows all about oppression; he has been leading the oppression of the people of SC-6 for 21 years now! The man is either ignorant or has no shame and I could care less which it is."

Clyburn is the third-ranking Democrat in the House of Representatives and a member of the Congressional Black Caucus.

Culler, a banker by profession, defeated Leon Winn in the GOP primary Tuesday with 65 percent of the vote to Winn's 35 percent.
