Hawaii Canoes In New York's Hudson River? Yes, At The Liberty Challenge (PHOTOS)

LOOK: What It's Like To Race Canoes In NY's Hudson River

The Pacific met the Atlantic last week at the Hawaiian Airlines Liberty Challenge, an international 15-mile canoe race on New York's Hudson River. It pits ocean-faring racing canoes against "one of the busiest urban waterways in the world," the longest outdoor regatta on the east coast.

The Liberty Challenge is hosted by the New York Outrigger club, an organization modeled after those in Hawaii, where regatta season is highly competitive every year.

Thirty teams, from such places as Canada, Germany, Sweden, New York, and, yes Hawaii, competed to win round trip airfare to Hawaii to compete in races there later this year.

The Philadelphia Dragonboat Association's Team Independence won the men's division and an entry into the Molokai Hoe race on October 12, and the Washington Canoe Club are the women's open champions, and get to race the Na Wahine O Ke Kai on September 21. Check out the photos from New York:
