Lea DeLaria Got Rev. Fred Phelps Kicked Out Of NY's Pride Parade

How 'OITNB' Star Lea DeLaria Got Rev. Fred Phelps Kicked Out Of A Pride Rally

“Orange Is The New Black" star Lea DeLaria is proud of many things: her career, her sexuality, and that one time she got Rev. Fred Phelps kicked out of a gay pride parade.

The actress behind Big Boo spoke with HuffPost Live’s Ricky Camilleri about what she called one of her proudest moments. At the 1992 New York Pride Rally, DeLaria said she saw Westboro Baptist Church Reverend Fred Phelps, who at the time wasn't as well-known, on the sidelines of the parade with a group of people protesting with their "horrible signs." With her big pink dress and combat boots, she said she walked over to him and started "heckling him."

"It reached a point where he literally tried to cross the police line to hit me," DeLaria said. "I was so horrible to him, and the police honestly looked like they just wanted an excuse to throw him out, so they were really excited that they got to throw him out."
