Police said a 90-year-old woman was "dragged off" the road and raped this week in the English town of Rochdale.
According to statement released by the Greater Manchester Police, the woman, who has not been named, was attacked Tuesday morning as she was walking to the butcher shop. The statement says the attacker covered her mouth, dragged her backward and then raped her after she lost consciousness.
Superintendent Alistair Mallen called the crime "vile, wicked and despicable."
"I am sure the entire community will share our revulsion at this," Mallen said, according to the release. "I now want people... to imagine if that had been your mom or grandma. I want to harness these feelings and use them to help the police do their job -- catch this man and put him before the courts."
Simon Danczuk, a local politician, said that "a real sense of shock and horror" has gripped the community following the attack. "The police need to do everything possible to catch this sick individual. But they need the help of the community and people must stand up and be counted," he said, per the Telegraph.
The suspect has been described as a white man. Police are reportedly analyzing security footage and carrying out forensic tests in the hope of catching the culprit.
