'Free' Dog Gets The Happy Ending She Deserves

Liberty's owner came forward on Wednesday and said the dog had escaped from her yard, NBC reported.

Every dog has its day and, for a pup named Liberty, that day came just before the Fourth of July.

The abandoned dog was left on a roadside in Northern California with "I need a home" and "free" etched on her fur in permanent marker, according to KNTV. So when Benicia resident Shannon Bettencourt spotted the poor pup after her shift at a local wine bar, she decided to take the dog, nicknamed "Libby," home.

"I was heartbroken," Bettencourt told the outlet. "Nobody wants to see an animal like that ever."

In photos of the abandoned dog, "free" appears in black writing on both sides of the pooch. "I need a home" is scrawled on her head.

Though Bettencourt said she initially planned to only keep the abandoned dog until she could figure out what happened, after spending a night snuggling with Libby, she decided not to part with the pup.

"It was actually kind of a blessing in disguise, even though it was very sad to start with." she told KTVU. "Somebody just kind of treated her like trash but she ended up being my treasure."

Bettencourt reportedly plans to adopt Libby this week, ensuring yet another happy ending for an abandoned pup.
