Speculation about the upcoming cast for the second season of Nic Pizzolatto's "True Detective" has been one of the year's biggest stories. Rumors have ranged from Jessica Chastain to Brad Pitt, but those were quickly shot down.

On Thursday, July 10, at the Television Critics Academy press tour, HBO execs announced that the cast of Season 2 would be revealed within the next week. Getting us even more excited, they teased, “The people we will cast will be well-known names." Now according to reports from The Wrap and Deadline, Colin Farrell is apparently in "deep negotiations" to play one of the three lead roles. Mike Fleming of Deadline.com says that he is "confident" the actor will be cast in the HBO series. According to TheWrap, Taylor Kitsch is also in negotiations of one of the younger male leads. (TheWrap's Jeff Sneider reports that Garrett Hedlund was also rumored for the role Kitsch would apparently play.)

HuffPost contacted representatives for HBO to comment on the reports; this post will be updated if and when they respond. Here's hoping this casting mystery gets solved faster than that of the Yellow King. (Time is a flat circle, etc.)
