Controversy over a mom's attempt to save her daughter's life -- and the magnetic car sign she's using to do it -- is shining the spotlight on one New Jersey neighborhood.
Libby Lisker was told by the Society Hill Condo Association in Cherry Hill that the sign on her car needs to be removed, as it violates the organization's rule against advertisements on parked vehicles, CBS 3 News in Philadelphia reported. But even while facing a $50 fine, Lisker said she's not taking it down for one simple reason: The sign could save her daughter's life.
The magnetic display is spreading the word on Lisker's daughter, Honey Bestic, who is in need of a kidney transplant and looking for potential donors. A Facebook page taking Lisker's goal online features a photo of the sign, which states "Honey B Needs a Kidney!" along with details on how to help.
"The rules are there for a reason," Lisker told CBS 3 News of the association's prohibition of car ads. "But I think that this maybe trumps the reason."
Bestic, 52, told the news source that she has an autoimmune disorder and has had two liver transplants in the past 20 years. According to Bestic, the medications she has taken to keep her liver healthy have "destroyed" her kidney, and she's been on the transplant list for more than two years.
Bestic is one of about 100,000 Americans on the kidney transplant list, according to the National Kidney Foundation. As there are roughly 122,000 people waiting for lifesaving organ transplants in total, the need for kidneys is particularly great -- more than 80 percent of those patients are waiting for a kidney. On average, 14 people die every day while waiting for a healthy kidney transplant.
One positive consequence from Lisker's story is the attention it has garnered toward Bestic's need for a transplant. An update on the family's Facebook page on July 13 notes that the news has spread far beyond just one condo association:
"I want to thank everyone for their responses to our news segment. I have gotten words of encouragement, gained some new friends, and some folks have even called and/or emailed the Society Hill Condo office. We haven't heard anything back from the board yet, but as soon as we know anything, you will too! Thanks again, folks! You have all lifted my family's spirits!"
