Daycare Owner Charged With Murder In 3-Year-Old's Hanging Death

A former daycare owner in Georgia is facing charges in the July death of a 3-year-old who accidentally hanged himself on the playground.

Janna Thompson, who previously ran Ms. Janna’s Daycare out of her home in Alphareta, is charged with second-degree murder and child cruelty, according to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Prosecutors say that Thompson left the boy, Thomas Maxwell Stevens, alone outside while she was occupied disciplining another child. When she went back outside, Stephens was lying flat on a slide with a loop of string around his neck that was attached to the top of the slide. He was not breathing.

“Somehow, the child was on this slide, and his head got into that loop,” George Gordon, spokesman for the Alpharetta Police Department, told CBS 46 back in July.

Ms. Janna's was closed shortly after the child's death.

The daycare had previously been cited for safety violations, according to WSBTV. The January before the boy’s death, a safety inspector found hazards in the children’s play area, including a wheel barrow left out, an unraveled water hose and “excessive” tree limbs and pine cones on the ground.
