Mariah Carey Struggles With Her Voice In Tokyo Concert

Mariah Carey Proves She's Not Lip-Synching

Mariah Carey opened her new tour in Japan over the weekend, but some reports on social media claim the songstress sounded nothing like her usual self.

Several clips making the rounds online appear to show Carey struggling at times during Saturday night's performance at Makuhari Messe, just outside of Tokyo. However, it's not clear whether the clips reveal the worst moments of a two-hour concert as a singer shakes off some opening night rust, or if Carey is truly having vocal problems.

At least a few of the videos posted online show her sounding significantly better.

Carey also won largely complimentary reviews from the local media, with Chunichi Shimbun saying her famed five-octave range is still intact.

TMZ notes that Carey appeared to be having problems with a microphone, which may explain at least some of the issues.

“It was not as bad (as the videos)," one source told the Gossip Cop website. "There were definitely some problems, but overall she was pretty good.”

If nothing else, it's clear from the clips that Mimi isn't lip-synching.

Carey has 19 more dates scheduled over the next six weeks on her "Elusive Chanteuse" tour of Asia and Australia. There are no U.S. dates currently on her schedule.
