‘Mum’s coming for Christmas.’

The colour drained from my face.

Now, for you, that might not be such a big swing. Your Mum might live in the same town or state.

Maria’s mum lives in North London.

We live in Cheltenham, Victoria.

‘Coming for Christmas’ meant staying for FIVE WEEKS.

It meant I had to *finally* clear the spare room of junk and detritus a full year after we’d moved in. It meant I’d had to remember not to saunter out of the bathroom like The Fonz in just my tight whites.
