When Todd Herzog, a former reality TV star, relapses after being sober for 114 days, Dr. Phil calls out his mom and stepdad for enabling the destructive behavior.
“I think that you two have absolutely the best intentions,” Dr. Phil tells them. But he warns, “I think you are implicit in killing your own son. I think you are making it possible for him to do what he’s doing. I think you’re making it easy for him to do what he’s doing.”
Herzog’s mom admits she has been enabling her son, who gained fame when he won Survivor: China, but says she’s at a loss for how to help him. “It feels like it’s a disease to me. Just like if it was cancer, I’d want to help. But I know I’m loving him to death,” she says, in the video above.
Dr. Phil doesn’t mince words with her. “I’m telling you that you are confusing love, because it’s not love to cripple Todd,” he says. “You’re doing it to make yourself feel better.”
On his show Friday, Dr. Phil offers Todd a second chance at sobriety. Check here to see where you can watch.
