SOAP LAKE, Wash. (AP) — An emaciated dog that was discarded in a dumpster in Washington state has found a new home.

City Public Safety Director Glenn Quantz climbed into the large trash bin after workers at an elementary school in the city of Soap Lake discovered the 9-year-old Labrador mix on Nov. 5. Quantz says he handed the scared dog to two school workers, climbed out of the bin and then drove the dog to the city animal shelter.

The Wenatchee World reports (http://is.gd/V76qz7 ) that the new owner named the dog Hank and he gets along well with another older dog living in the home.

City officials tried unsuccessfully to find the dog's previous owner.

Quantz says the case was emotional because the dog was "thrown away like a piece of garbage."
