American presidencies as we know them today are term-limited, allowing the most fortunate incumbents to win re-election, serve a second term, and then be on their way.

While the three most recent U.S. presidents -- Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Barack Obama -- did follow that trajectory, the preceding 41 presidents saw a wide array of timelines. Franklin D. Roosevelt served three full terms in office, while the untimely deaths of presidents like William Henry Harrison and James A. Garfield prevented them from serving more than a few months.
