Video Shows Terrifying Moment When Bus Crashes Into 8 Cars

A Michigan bus driver reportedly crashed into eight cars over a half mile-long stretch of road after falling asleep at the wheel. The terrifying accident was captured on video.

According to the Detroit Free Press, 65-year-old Leon Rasheed was charged with a misdemeanor traffic violation on Wednesday. He had been driving a bus in West Bloomfield, Mich., in October when he allegedly dozed off at the wheel and careened into eight cars and a mailbox.

Video of the accident, captured by surveillance cameras in the bus, appears to show Rasheed suddenly jumping up from his seat and attempting to put his weight on the brakes as the bus slams into one vehicle after the next. The footage also shows cracks appearing in the bus' windshield before it falls off.

Neither Rasheed nor the lone passenger on the bus -- operated by Suburban Mobility Authority for Regional Transportation (SMART) -- was injured in the accident, and no one died in the crash, WXYZ-TV reports. However, a couple in the first car that was hit reportedly suffered “numerous broken bones.”

“The crash scene was half a mile long,” Det. Lt. Curt Lawson of the West Bloomfield Police Department told WXYZ. “It is one of the largest crash scenes in West Bloomfield history. We are fortunate no one was killed.”

Rasheed, who retired in December, was arraigned on a moving violation causing serious impairment of body function, per the Free Press. He could serve up to 93 days in jail.

Per WDIV-TV:

On his way into court Wednesday, reporters asked Rasheed if he had anything to say to the people involved in the crash.

"I'm sorry," he said.
