Obama's New Twitter Account Just Broke A World Record

President Barack Obama broke the Guinness world record Monday for the "fastest time to reach 1 million followers on Twitter."

Obama finally got his own Twitter account, which will feature tweets exclusively from the president. The account, @POTUS, reached 1 million followers within five hours of its launch, according to Guinness World Records. The account will be inherited by the next president in 2016.

A time-lapse graphic from Twitter shows just how quickly the president amassed followers from around the world.

The record was previously held by actor Robert Downey Jr., who reached 1 million followers in a little less than 24 hours after joining Twitter in April 2014.

Obama may have reached 1 million followers at record speed, but he has a ways to go before he breaks the record of having the most followers. Singer Katy Perry holds the record for the the most Twitter followers at almost 70 million. Singer Justin Bieber is second with 64 million, and Obama's other Twitter account, @BarackObama, which is now run by Organizing for Action staff, sits in third place with 59.3 million.
