Here Are The Companies With The Biggest Revenues In Each State

Surprise: Apple and Microsoft aren't on this map.

It looks like the largest companies by revenue aren't always the big Silicon Valley names.

Broadview Networks, a communications provider for small businesses along the East Coast, used data from the research firm Hoover's to put together a map of the companies with the biggest revenue in each state in the last fiscal year. Banks, automakers and large-scale retailers like Costco were among the corporations that made the list, beating out tech giants like Apple and Microsoft.

Check out your state below:

By the way, those tiny logos you can't read are CVS Caremark (Rhode Island), Lockheed Martin (Maryland), E.I du Pont de Nemours and Company (Delaware), C&S Wholesale Grocers Inc. (New Hampshire), Johnson & Johnson (New Jersey). For the complete list of companies and revenues by state, visit Broadview's website.

The biggest revenues went to Walmart ($485.7 billion) in Arkansas and Exxon Mobile ($411.9) in Texas.

Verizon was the biggest player in New York, with $127 billion in revenue in the last fiscal year. On the West Coast, Nike earned the top spot in Oregon with $27.8 billion, and Chevron in California with $212 billion in revenue this past fiscal year, edging out Apple, which is also based in California and earned $182 billion.

Among the food retailers that came out on top, Keurig won out in Vermont, with $4.7 billion in revenue, and grocery chain Hannaford saw the biggest revenue of $4.4 billion in Maine. Kroger was the biggest company in Ohio, with $108.5 billion revenue, and in Washington, everybody's favorite wholesale store, Costco, topped with $112.6 billion in revenue.

Why exactly aren't some of the country's most recognizable tech brands on the map? Broadview explains:

At first glance, you may ask, “Where are Apple and Microsoft?” Yes, these are huge companies but this map is specifically looking at total revenue from the last fiscal year. If we look at California with Apple vs. Chevron, there is a large discrepancy between market value and total revenues. Apple’s market value as of March 31, 2015 was $724 billion while Chevron’s was only (and we use “only” lightly) $197 billion. In terms of revenue, Chevron comes out on top with $203 billion in the last fiscal year while Apple had revenues of $182 billion.

CORRECTION: Because of an error in Broadview's blog post, this article incorrectly noted that Love's Travel Stops & Country Stores earned $426.09 billion in revenue last fiscal year. It earned $26.09 billion.
