It could be considered the most anticipated makeup launch of the past two decades: For years, beauty junkies and fashion fans alike have watched as makeup artist Pat McGrath created amazing products for brands like Dior (she's the brain behind the original DiorShow mascara), CoverGirl, Max Factor, Gucci, and Dolce & Gabbana, waiting patiently for the day the makeup genius would come out with a line of her own. Well, it's not a full line, but it's a start. Today, McGrath announced the launch of her first-ever makeup item: a dazzling gold paint for the eyes, lips, and skin. And yes, it's just as extravagant and exciting as you'd expect.

If you've been following McGrath on Instagram you might have got an inkling something was about to go down. First there were the gold lips she did at Prada's spring show. She also posted multiple images of models wearing gold makeup using the hashtag "#MakeupByPatMcGrath", which now has more than 4,000 posts. There was also a series of mysterious videos that showed gold glitter being whisked in a beaker with the caption, "Coming soon..." It was beginning to seem like King Midas has taken over McGrath's feed.

The product in question? A brilliant yellow-gold paint with flecks of matching glitter that's meant to be used pretty much anywhere--lips, eyes, or cheeks. But what no one expected was how McGrath would actually announce the big news. She did so today in Paris--not at some luxurious private house or swanky restaurant, but outside in the Tuileries gardens. Armed with little plastic cups of Gold 001 (the product's official name) and sitting on plastic chairs, McGrath and her team treated top models, editors, and even the general public to free makeup applications with the sparkling gold paint. There were people strolling through the park with dramatic wings, gilded lips and brows, and even a few daring individuals who had half their faces covered in dazzling swirls of the stuff (I wimped out and just got a bit of liner). It's historically difficult to find a decent gold makeup shade with a rich payoff, so this paint is somewhat of a revelation.

Gold 001 will launch sometime in 2016 on McGrath's forthcoming website, patmcgrath.com. And even though we don't know exactly what the packaging will look like yet (or if it'll come with an applicator tool), we do know each item will be adorned with the following saying: "Causes a heightened sense of confidence and a potential overdose of glamour." Those are two things that we could all use a little more of these days, don't you think?
