Allie Wilkinson

Allie Wilkinson is a writer and multimedia professional specializing in science and the environment. She earned a bachelor’s degree in environmental studies from Eckerd College and a certificate in conservation biology from Columbia University, before going on to earn her master’s in science journalism from Hofstra University. Her work has appeared in a variety of media, including newspapers, magazines, and radio, as well as in publications and outreach materials for the United States Geological Survey and the American Geophysical Union. She makes her publishing debut in the forthcoming The Best Science Writing Online 2012.

Allie is an advocate for the use of social media and multimedia in communicating science. She has given talks on the subject and in 2009 was named one of the “Top Twitterers Grist Staff Can’t Live Without.” Allie also founded the DC Science Tweetup (#dcsciencetweetup), an informal monthly event that brings together people with an interest in science and science communication in the Washington, D.C., area.

In early 2012 Allie founded This Is What a Scientist Looks Like, an ongoing community photo project dedicated to changing the pervasive stereotype that scientists are all unapproachable old white men in labcoats. The project has been covered by Scientific American, Nature, and The Washington Post.
