Grew up in a tarpaper shack without indoor plumbing, joined a monastery, had an extensive career as a female model, actress, author, and screenwriter, (Coming to America, Married With Children, 227 etc.) Then he traded in his weave and acrylic nails for a Ph.D. in neuroscience. His research interests are interoceptive awareness (how we feel what we feel) and the neuroanatomy of emotion (why we do what we do), the pathophysiology of stress as an antecedent to disease and communication between the microbiome and the brain. He holds the dubious title of “Most Successful Alternative Model” in history (greeting cards). He has authored four books and currently has blogs, on Psychology Today (Obesely Speaking), and the Los Angeles Times as well. He is a Research Associate of The Center for the Neurobiology of Stress and Resilience at UCLA Geffen School of Medicine. He is married, has two dogs, and lives in Los Angeles, California.
