Derek Abbott

Physicist and electronic engineer

Derek Abbott is a physicist and electronic engineer. He is a full professor at the University of Adelaide, Australia. His research interests are in complex systems and interdisciplinary applications of physics and engineering. He has appeared on international television and radio and has also received scientific reportage in New Scientist, The Sciences, Scientific American, Nature, The New York Times, and Sciences et Avenir. He has served as an editor and/or guest editor for a number of journals including IEEE Journal of Solid-State Circuits, Chaos (AIP), Journal of Optics B (Fluctuation Noise Letters, Proceedings of the IEEE, PLOSONE, IEEE Photonics and is currently on the Editorial Boards of Nature's Scientific Reports, Royal Society Online, and IEEE Access. He co-authored the book Stochastic Resonance published by Cambridge University Press and co-edited the book Quantum Aspects of Life published by Imperial College Press. He is author of the popular book the Wickedictionary, which honors the 100th anniversary of Ambrose Bierce's Devil's Dictionary. Prof Abbott is a Fellow of the Institute of Physics (IOP) and is a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical & Electronic Engineers (IEEE).
