Gabriel Labbate

Gabriel Labbate has more than 15 years of work in the field of environment, poverty and human development. His academic background comprises a degree in Biology from the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina, a master degree in Economics from New York University, and a Ph.D. in Environmental Studies from the University of California, Santa Cruz.

Mr. Labbate´s field experience includes Latin America, Eastern Europe, the former Soviet Union, China and the Pacific. His work is mostly interdisciplinary including environmental valuation, quantitative poverty analysis, household surveys, debt for environment swaps, and integration of social issues into land use and biodiversity conservation policies. Lately, his work has concentrated on cost-benefit analysis of REDD+ policies and green financing.

Mr. Labbate has worked for the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), the International Labor Organization (ILO), the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the United Nations International Children Fund (UNICEF) and the private sector. He has several publications in environmental valuation, poverty and natural resource use, human development, and cost-benefit analysis of environmental policy.

His current position is of Team Leader for REDD+ in Latin America and the Caribbean at UN Environment. He is based in Panama city.
