Jeffrey A. Joerres is Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Manpower Inc. Having joined Manpower in 1993, Joerres served as Vice President of Marketing, and later, as Senior Vice President of European Operations and Global Account Management. It was in 1999 that he was promoted to President and CEO, and in 2001 that he was named Chairman of the Board.
Joerres has led a transformation of Manpower's business strategy, adding new business lines that have expanded the company's ability to assist clients and candidates in navigating the changing world of work. In his role, he leads Manpower’s provision of innovative workforce solutions to companies of all sizes worldwide, allowing them to meet the challenges of today’s changing business environment. Joerres is a true thought leader within his industry, and a pioneer in emerging markets. His role at Manpower has seen him advising domestic and foreign government officials about how to transform their labor markets to compete in the global economy. In 2010, Joerres testified at a hearing of the US Congress Joint Economic Committee focused on policies to foster economic growth, where he recommended programs and solutions to drive job creation.
Under Joerres’ tenure, Manpower has experienced rapid growth, expanding the footprint of the organization to 4,000 offices across 82 countries and territories. His strong leadership ensured that Manpower weathered the economic storm of 2008-2009 admirably, and enabled the organization to leverage its strengths to take advantage of the moves the company made during the downturn. Manpower has climbed the ranks of the Fortune 500 American companies list, moving from 183 to 143 in 2010. Under Joerres, Fortune magazine named Manpower as one of the most admired companies in the staffing industry for the eighth year in a row in 2010 and the company was named to the FTSE4Good Index Series for the second consecutive year. Also in 2010 Joerres was named as the Most Powerful Person in staffing by Staffing Industry Review magazine. In 2009, Joerres was named to Institutional Investor magazine's annual list of the best CEOs in America for the sixth time, ranking #1 in the Business & Professional Services category.
Joerres is known as a strong proponent of job training and workforce development initiatives. Outside of the company, he serves on the board of trustees for the Committee for Economic Development (CED), and is co-chair of the CEO Diversity Committee of the Greater Milwaukee Committee. Joerres was the 2008 Co-chair at the World Economic Forum India Economic Summit, as well as the keynote speaker at the World Human Resources Congress in 2000, 2004 and 2006. Prior to joining Manpower, Joerres held the position of Vice President of Sales and Marketing for ARI Network Services, a publicly held, high-tech electronic data interchange company. He has also held several management positions within IBM.
Joerres has a bachelor's degree from Marquette University's College of Business Administration, from which he graduated in 1983. In addition to the Manpower Inc. board, Joerres is a member of the board of directors of Artisan Funds, Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, Johnson Controls and the US Council for International Business (USCIB). He is also a 2008 Woodrow Wilson International Award Recipient for Corporate Citizenship; Featured Second Life Thought Leader in 2009 Evolution of the Virtual Workforce; Featured Panelist in 2009 US Secretary of Education Initiative for Advancement of Technical Colleges to Address Trade Skills Gap; Featured Panelist in 2009 Ernst & Young Strategic Growth Forum.
