Trans man, theatre historian
Joshua Bastian Cole (whose preferred name is Cole) is an out transman playwright, dramaturg, theatre historian, and independent scholar. Cole's love for theatre started early when he saw an all-female cast of 'The King and I' on a Girl Scout trip. He wrote his first play in 6th grade, which was about a summer camp romance, and he has been writing about relationships ever since. He is currently working on a queer trans adaptation/mash-up of 'Peter Pan' and 'Pinocchio.' As an actor, Cole has appeared at downtown NYC venues including Dixon Place, University Settlement, and HERE Arts Center. He has played leading transmen in films which have toured festivals internationally, and he has been a guest on radio and podcasts. His publications include essays in the anthologies 'Trans Forming Families', 'Beyond Masculinity', and 'Visible: A Femmethology'. He has been featured in 'Bust', 'Autostraddle', 'Out Magazine', 'Original Plumbing', 'The Daily Beast', 'Time Out New York', 'London Metro', and Jacob Anderson-Minshall's syndicated column: 'Trans Nation'. Cole's scholarly work focuses on transmen's theatre performance and trans representations in dramatic literature. Before relocating from NYC to Burlington, Vermont, Cole taught in the Department of Speech, Communication, and Theatre Arts at CUNY, BMCC. He holds an M.A. in Theatre History and Criticism from CUNY, Brooklyn College and a B.A. in Theatre and Dance from James Madison University. Learn more about Cole at: joshuabastiancole.weebly.com
