Labor leader Joshua Pechthalt is the President of the California Federation of teachers, which represents more than 120,000 educators and support staff from pre-K through college. He is also an American Federation of Teachers Vice President and a Vice President of the California AFL-CIO. Pechthalt taught English as a second language for two years in Cali, Colombia, and social studies for 21 years at Manual Arts High School in Los Angeles. Pechthalt earned a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from the University of California, Santa Cruz, and a master’s degree in Latin American studies from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He and his wife are the proud parents of one daughter, who attends high school in the Los Angeles Unified School District.
