Karim Camara

New York State Assembly member; Pastor of Abundant Life Church in Brooklyn.

Karim Camara is a member of the New York State Assembly and Pastor of Abundant Life Church in Brooklyn, New York. As a member of the Assembly he represents the 43rd District, which includes parts of Crown Heights, Lefferts Gardens, and East Flatbush. He serves as the Chairman of the New York State Black, Puerto Rican, Hispanic and Asian Legislative Caucus.

Camara’s passion for public service began with his parents who were civic activists in Brooklyn. His passion grew while attending Xavier University in New Orleans where, as a campus leader, he was invited to stand with President Bill Clinton as he announced the AmeriCorps program to the country. After college, Camara continued to be active in his community in Brooklyn including working at the Cush Campus Schools in Crown Heights, at the American Red Cross of Greater New York, and as a Congressional intern for the late Congressman Major Owens.

In 2005, Camara was married in New Orleans just a few days before Hurricane Katrina struck. From their honeymoon in Aruba, Camara and his wife, Orelia, watched the city they knew and loved devastated. Camara was shocked and saddened by the numerous government failures. Knowing that society has a duty to protect its most vulnerable citizens, Camara was inspired to run for office to make sure government helps those in need.

As an Assemblyman, Camara has continued to strive for social justice and economic equality. Whether as an elected official, ordained minister or motivational speaker, Karim Camara is committed to his life purpose: inspiring individuals, empowering organizations and transforming communities.
