Mouaffaq Nyrabia

Syrian National Coalition’s Representative to the Benelux and European Union

Mouaffaq Nyrabia is the Representative of the National Coalition of Syrian Revolution and Opposition Forces (SOC) to the Benelux and European Union, and a member of its political committee. Born in Hama in 1949, he became actively involved in political opposition after the 1970 coup d’etat, which brought Hafez al-Assad to power. He was later imprisoned and tortured due to his political activities (1980-1984).

During Bashar al-Assad’s rule, Nyrabia was a prominent figure in the "Damascus Spring" and one of the founders of the Damascus declaration in 2005 before being forced into hiding. In 2011, he was involved in the establishment of the Syrian National Council (SNC) and, in 2013, fled Syria out of fear for his safety.
