Rep. Tim Murphy

Congressman for 18th District of Pennsylvania; Chairman, Energy & Commerce Subcommittee on Oversight & Investigations

Congressman Tim Murphy, Ph.D. is serving his sixth term representing the 18th District, which encompasses parts of suburban Pittsburgh in Southwestern Pennsylvania. As Chairman of the Energy and Commerce Committee on Oversight and Investigations, Chairman Murphy, led a year-long committee investigation into the nation’s broken mental health system that gathered testimony from thousands of parents, providers, patients and police officers.

The investigation served as the basis of his Helping Families in Mental Health Crisis Act, which has been called the most significant overhaul of the nation’s broken mental health system since the Kennedy Administration. With a focus on delivering acute psychiatric care to the most challenging cases of serious mental illness, the bill expands access to inpatient and outpatient psychiatric treatment, invests in brain research to further understanding of the underlying causes of neurological and psychiatric disorders, and breaks down convoluted legal barriers preventing family members from helping a loved one with a serious mental illness. The Helping Families in Mental Health Crisis Act has been cosponsored by 100 Republican and Democratic lawmakers, and has garnered praise and support from the Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, and numerous other newspapers, professional organizations, and mental health advocates. In addition to his congressional work, Rep. Murphy serves as a Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Navy Reserve Medical Service Corps, treating wounded warriors with Traumatic Brain Injury and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Prior to serving in Congress, Dr. Murphy, author of “The Angry Child” and “Overcoming Passive-Aggression,” was a practicing psychologist specializing in child and family treatment.
