As ICMA's Executive in Residence and Director for Domestic Strategic Initiatives, Dr. Ron Carlee leads efforts to provide research and implementation tools to professional local government executives. ICMA, the International City/County Management Association, represents approximately 9,000 professional leaders of local governments and provides a range of resources to support effective local government management. Carlee joined the staff of ICMA after working for over 30 years in local government in diverse, senior executive positions. For the previous eight years, Carlee was County Manager of Arlington, Virginia, where he focused on creating an inclusive, sustainable community. He has specific expertise in emergency management; financial management; smart-growth, transit-oriented land use; climate action; ethics, social equity, immigrant rights and affordable housing; civic engagement; and inter-organizational relations.
Carlee holds a Doctorate in Public Administration (DPA) from George Mason University, Masters Degree in Urban Studies from the University of Alabama-Birmingham, and Bachelors Degree in English from the University of Montevallo. Carlee is a Certified Manager (CM), and teaches graduate classes in Public Administration in the Trachtenberg School at the George Washington University. He is a Fellow in the National Academy for Public Administration.
