Russell James’ work as an innovative and visually daring director and photographer spans advertising, magazine editorial, books and television programming. Among the brands for which he’s created iconic commercials and print spreads are Evian, Armani, Hermes, Revlon and Rolex. His most recent advertising effort is a new TV commercial featuring the Brazilian sensation Adriana Lima for Victoria’s Secret. Russell’s agency credits include creative powerhouses such as BBDO, The Martin Agency and TBWA\Chiat\Day. Editorially, his work has appeared in such publications as Esquire, GQ, Vogue, Allure and Sports Illustrated. Russell has also established his pop culture credentials in front of the camera, serving as the host of the VH1 reality series The Shot, created by producer Ken Mok (America’s Next Top Model), which identified up and coming fashion photographers. He is currently working on an ambitious, multi-media project titled NOMAD, which consists of a one-hour film that fuses modern mythology, ancient cultures, powerful visual images, indigenous music and performance art, as well as a documentary about the making of the film and a travelling exhibition tied to its content. Known for his love of the environment and dramatic architecture, Russell is often found shooting in locations ranging from the shores of the Caribbean to the outback mountains of his native Australia to the ice flows of the Arctic to the more civilized realms of designer homes and studios in New York, Los Angeles, London and Paris.
