First elected in 2009, Missouri State Rep. Stacey Newman is going into in her 8th year in the state house, representing a district which includes Washington University in St. Louis. She has been a consistent voice on gun violence prevention (GVP) and a fierce opponent of the gun lobby in the legislature, taking the lead in the House in fighting extreme gun policies. Recently she was invited to participate in the 50 State GVP meeting at the White House with Vice President Joe Biden and other elected state leaders. Rep. Newman is a founding member of the national American State Legislators for Gun Violence Prevention and was part of the Vice President’s White House Initiative on the Prevention of Gun Violence. In addition, she was part of the planning team of Washington University’s recent Gun Violence Initiative, an ongoing project through their Institute of Public Health. She sponsors universal background checks, domestic violence firearm, gun violence restraining order and child firearm endangerment legislation. Rep. Newman, the chair of the House Progressive Caucus also takes the lead in the state house in advocating for reproductive justice, voters rights and equality rights. In addition, she founded and directs ProgressWomen.com, an initiative to motivate progressive women to show up & vote and get engaged.
