Steven Willems is the Vice President of IT Solutions and acting Head of Technology for the National Marrow Donor Program® (NMDP)/Be The Match®, the world’s leading nonprofit organization focused on saving lives through marrow and cord blood transplantation.

In this role, Willems develops and drives technology strategies that connect potential marrow donors with blood cancer patients around the world, while also giving health care partners and providers the tools they need to improve performance and decision-making.

Willems’ 20-plus years of technology leadership experience includes his previous position as vice president of information systems for ELCA Board of Pensions (now Portico Benefit Services), a retirement and health benefits provider. At ELCA, he led a team that successfully achieved a 99.9 percent rate of stability and reliability in technology infrastructure.

An adjunct professor at Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota, Willems created and teaches courses in information technology management for IT professionals. He is committed to increasing technology access for schools and community organizations in need and has served as board chair for the nonprofit Minnesota Computers for Schools since 2009.

Willems earned his master’s in business administration from Augsburg College, and his bachelor’s in business administration from the University of St. Thomas.
