On November 1, 2010, Commissioner William Roberts took up his appointment as National Commander of The Salvation Army in the United States, after serving as Territorial Commander of the Kenya West Territory, with headquarters in Kakamega, since the date of the creation of that territory, 1 March 2008.
Bill, the child of officers, is married to the former Nancy Overly, and together are officers of the USA Central Territory, having been commissioned in that territory in June 1971, as members of the Victorious Session. After commissioning, he served in three corps appointments, followed by a number of appointments in divisional administration, including divisional financial secretary, divisional secretary, and general secretary. His final two divisional appointments were as leader of two divisions: Western Michigan-Northern Indiana (Grand Rapids, Michigan) and then Metropolitan (Chicago, Illinois).
In December 2001, he took up his first non-USA appointment, when he was named Territorial Commander of the South America East Territory, comprising the countries of Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay, with headquarters in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
He was then appointed, in February 2005, to International Headquarters, as the International Secretary for Business Administration. In this appointment he was the senior advisor to the General and Chief of the Staff on all matters of finance planning and utilization affecting the international Salvation Army. During this time he was also chairman of Reliance Bank Ltd. It was from this appointment he was transferred to take up his responsibilities in Kenya West.
Bill holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Wayne State University, and a Master of Arts degree in Religious Studies from the University of Detroit. He has also studied at the University of Minnesota, Nazarene Theological Seminary and North Park Seminary. He attended the International College for Officers in 1982.
He has served on the teaching staff of the Central Territory’s Officer Continuing Education Program as well as the Central Territory-Asbury Theological Seminary Preaching Seminar.
In previous appointments he has been a member of Rotary International, and the Economic Club of Chicago
He and Nancy are the proud parents of four children – William, Rebecca, Barbara, and Bramwell – who, along with their spouses, have provided them with ten grandchildren, who have made Nancy and Bill even prouder.
