Driving in Drag in Mississippi and Other Stories

I met up with Justin in the small town of Starkville, Mississippi -- the neighboring town of Columbus, which had been my home for the previous three days. I followed him on a rainy two hour drive to his apartment in the state's largest city and capital, Jackson. On our way to the gay bar- one of only three in this city of over half a million people, I learned how this bar often serves people who drive long distances from the larger rural areas of Mississippi. I filmed Justin's apprehensive monologue on the drive to the bar. It is neither far nor treacherous, but being out in public and driving as a man in full drag including a wig so large it presses against the ceiling of the car presents an array of potential problems in a place like Jackson.
