Halloween in Heels

In Paris there's Nuit Blanche (White Night), the artfest when galleries and stores stay open all night. And the City has its very own version. New York's first Fashion's Night Out is as much about shopping as about stepping out and partying down. Stores turned into nightclubs. Red carpets. Appletinis. Bouncers. DJs spinning between the racks. Hundreds lined up around the block at Bergdorf. Mobs on Howard Street, hoping to get inside the high-end hipster boutique Opening Ceremony.

With Black cards drawn, Upper East Siders looked like the big spenders. At Isaac Mizrahi's new East 67th Street boutique, neon leather bags stole the show. Isaac says he's smitten with the garishly great color; even his home collection is infused with neon upholstered furniture.

At Christian Louboutin, where they were lined up for foot massages while watching a live tableau of a 17th-century shoe fitting, I ran into some fashion bloggers, including Anisha Lakhani. She called this five-borough fashion moment "Halloween in Heels" and was making the rounds for free drinks.

Speaking of Halloween...downtown power shoulder pads, leopard prints, gladiator spikes, and redder than red lips dominated the scene. In SoHo, it was the time to strut your stuff. Shoppers piled it on and turned lower Manhattan into a block party. Now everyone is just hoping Fashion's Night Out turns into a blockbuster at the cash register so they can party on, again, next year.
