If, as is much said these days, Mitt Romney needs a big win in the presidential debates starting on Wednesday, he has done it before. Just before the Florida primary eight months ago Romney faced the most serious threat of his bid for the GOP nomination as Newt Gingrich emerged from a surprising South Carolina win and seem poised for a Sunshine State victory. Romney rose to the occasion with a blistering debate performance that secured Florida and left Gingrich on the floor for the rest of the campaign. Slapping Gingrich around might be easy compared to taking on Barack Obama, but that night Romney showed he has it in him.
