Memorial Day: Real Support for the Troops

Paul Rieckhoff leads the Iraq & Afghanistan Veterans of America, which has done real good for veterans, including helping with the GI Bill, back pay for stop-lossed vets, serious Veterans Affairs funding, generally real stuff.

He reminds us:

For veterans, there is no day of the year when the civilian-military
divide feels greater. On Memorial Day, it feels like we are citizens of
two different countries.
This holiday should be a solemn day of remembrance for the more than
one million American service members of all generations who have given
their lives in defense of our country, including the 5,454 men and women who have died in Iraq and

and IAVA specifically recommends what you can do.

Okay, I figure I'm renewing my own commitments:

  • board membership at IAVA, which includes active work in social media and in Washington
  • assistance to the Department of Veterans Affairs, focusing on better customer service, etc, for vets
  • support of other groups, including for veterans of prior wars.

More to come...
