2013-01-18-Fairhaven_02_410.jpgThe small town comes complete with big personalities in Fairhaven. In tracing a couple of days when Dave (Chris Messina), an exile from the titular Massachusetts fishing town presently living la vida loca on the west coast, returns for the funeral of his estranged father and reunites with his old friends, the questing Jon (Tom O'Brien) and the more rooted Sam (Rich Sommer), the film captures an intimate portrait of three souls taking a new look at what bonded them to begin with, and what that friendship now means in their lives. For all the partying, drinking, and strip-club-going that the tale encompasses, it's a surprisingly delicate character study, and a satisfying trip into the world of some engaging humans.

Tom O'Brien makes his feature film directing debut with Fairhaven, and co-wrote the script with Messina, so I was curious to find out how this small, incisive project came about. Click on the player to hear my interview with O'Brien.
