Everyone Seems to Be Doin' Valentine's Day Wrong

Why is Valentines Day a day that some people dread? It is a day to appreciate or admire your relationship, or those who are in special relationships.

What do you think of when you hear someone talk about Valentine's Day? I guess it all depends on what relationship stage you are currently in. Maybe you are a hopeless romantic and love the idea of it, or maybe you are as single as can be and hate when anyone mentions it. But really, why is Valentines Day a day that some people dread? It is a day to appreciate or admire your relationship, or those who are in special relationships.

Don't let social media trick you; realize what's important!

When you reach the stage where social media is no longer detrimental to your relationship, you will feel so much better! Sure, social media is a great way to connect with friends, but it should not be a place to brag, show-off, or try to be something you are not. There are so many Twitter accounts that show "relationship goals" and "the perfect gift for your significant other", but what does that really mean? The only real relationship goal I think you should have at least, is to just be happy. If you are not happy in a relationship, what are you doing in it?! Do not let social media tell you what should make you happy, but determine for yourself what makes you the happiest.

Don't feel obligated to spend a ton of money!

After being in a college relationship for almost a year now, my view on Valentine's Day has changed. We both agreed to keep it simple, just dinner and a movie. We spend money throughout the year on each other with little surprises, whether it would be a small card, a sweatshirt, some candy, etc. Sure, if you are feeling like you have extra cash and you want to spoil your significant other, go for it! But if you do not have that kind of money lying around, do not stress over it!

You should feel appreciated everyday!

Ladies, if you do not feel like everyday is your day to shine, you're doin' it wrong! Men, you too! You should be in a relationship where you feel like you are worth a million bucks every day, at all times. Sure, you will have a few fights here and there, but for the most part, you should feel important. It is my first Valentine's Day with my boyfriend in just a few days and I cannot wait celebrate a day for appreciating how lucky I am for being treated the way I am on a daily basis.

Don't have a boyfriend or girlfriend?

Make Valentine's Day about you! Go out and treat yourself to a new pair of yoga pants, a new video game, or even something as simple as Valentine's candy (wait until after Saturday if you want a discount!). Treat yourself to something that you have had your eye on for a while. Celebrate being you, and celebrate the love and happiness you bring to other people's lives! If you are lucky enough and are away at school, maybe your mom or dad will send you a package full of Valentine's Day treats!
