Maintaining national security is obviously incredibly important. After all, keeping citizens safe and society thriving is perhaps the primary duty of any government. However, in light of the recent NSA leaks many have begun to question both the extent to which the department operates and the enormous power it wields behind closed doors. Since its expansion following the tragic events of 9/11 the NSA has grown a lot both in size and capability as the recent revelations have shown. The publication of some of its more controversial tactics have led groups on both sides of the political spectrum to question if the right balance has been struck between maintaining national security and ensuring that civil liberties are upheld.
