On a rare night off -- or when service comes to a close for the day -- chefs need to eat, too. Some head to under-the-radar neighborhood gems while others crave a more upscale experience. Either way, their favorite places help them make the most of each bite taken off the clock.

When a craving for Chinese-style noodles strikes, Andrew Carmellini, who helms restaurants like The Dutch and Locanda Verde in New York, visits a Chinatown favorite. Jenn Louis of Lincoln fame in Portland, Oregon, opts for Mexican food and barbacoa soup at a local standout. And Daniel Boulud stays loyal to a few stalwarts in his hometown of Lyon, France.
