Veterans Adaptability Paramount in Building their Future

As I was starting out in the Military, which was my very early adult life, I use to struggle with the fact that things rarely came out the way I intended or hoped for. This was a very fixed mindset that I had created through my younger years as a youth. This was the same for not being able to see more than one way to do the same task. I would get so frustrated that others would actually do the same task in differing ways. Even though they came out with the same or better result than I had it didn't sit well with me. Which would often lead to a perception of disrespect for others ideas and capabilities resulting in bad relationships both personally and professionally.

Adaptability is a very important key strength that I learned while in the military. As member of the military you are put into many situations that either you have no control of the process, outcome or environment. I had two choices, either develop the ability to be adaptable or live a very painful existence amongst those that could.

"Adaptability is being able to adjust to any situation at any given time." - John Wooden

I came up with the internal realization that if I set in my mind; plan A, plan B and plan C it made it easier to not get set on a particular outcome. Most of the time I came to realize that plan A was actually not the best plan and that being open to other outcomes became much more satisfying. This alleviated a lot of stress and angst over trying to force a particular outcome.

There are many benefits to displaying adaptability:

  • You attract like-minded people that are the same
  • Things that you haven't thought of will be exposed
  • Provide flexibility to adapt to others solutions
  • Communication lines will remain open
  • Mutual respect will be established and flourish

Our Veterans have all been exposed to having this core skill and can bring that to bear in most situations. This makes them great employees and leaders that can be open to respecting and accepting others ways of achieving results and ultimately success.
