This week, the social media team at Location3 Media launched a friendly social media competition using the influence-tracker Klout. The goal is to get all of our employees more familiar with -- and active on -- their personal social channels. Each month, we'll award two prizes: one for the highest Klout score and one for the most-improved Klout score. After six months, the employee with the highest average month-over-month increase in Klout score will win our grand prize: a ticket to SXSW 2014. Pretty awesome stuff.
So, why is it worth launching a competition like this in the first place, you ask? It boils down to a concept many of us here at Location3 celebrate: learn by doing.
When I tell a friend or family member I work in social media I usually get one of three reactions. The person I'm talking to will:
1. Tell me they're never active on their social media accounts because it's a waste of time.
2. Complain about those annoying, distant acquaintances who pop up in their newsfeed, becoming increasingly suspicious as they explain that I (and my social-media-supporting kind) may very well be responsible for these unwanted posts.
3. Ask me what the real point of Twitter is.
Some of my colleagues share similar grievances. And, hey, I totally get it. Social media can be confusing. It's always changing. It can reek of narcissism. But when you learn to navigate through the noise and tailor your social channels in a way that's right and relevant for you, you won't be able to live without them. And not in the "I-shouldn't-be-stalking-my-ex-boyfriend-but-I-just-can't-stop" sort of way, but in a way that leaves you feeling fulfilled, informed, and connected.
Andrew Smith famously said that "People fear what they don't understand and hate what they can't conquer."
