The 10 Cities That Spend The Most On Coffee: Bundle.com

The Most Caffeinated Cities

A stop at the local coffee shop is an essential part of millions of Americans' morning routines, but there are some cities where residents have to pay extra to get their daily brew.

Over half of American adults drink coffee on a regular basis, but the amount they spend on it has a lot to do with which city they live in, according to business and personal finance site bundle.com. The site found which cities spend the most on coffee based on trends at 16 well-known coffee chains like Dunkin' Donuts, Starbucks and Stumptown.

It's perhaps to be expected that the hometown of the ubiquitous coffee chain Starbucks ranks in the top three cities for spending on coffee: Seattle's residents spend 2.37 times the national average on coffee. New York, which the New York Times says is experiencing a coffee renaissance, is also in the top three, with New Yorkers spending 2.9 times the average American on coffee.

Still, considering consumers' reduced confidence and coffee price trends, it may be a surprise that people spend money on coffee in shops at all. Coffee is among commodities with the fastest growing prices, even outpacing increasing in fuel prices earlier this year . Supply shortages are largely to blame and coffee prices stood at $2.12 a pound in August, up from $1.57 a year earlier, according to the International Coffee Organization.

In May, Starbucks increased the price of its packaged coffee for the second time this year, boosting the price by 17 percent.
