'2012 Miss USA Pageant': Miss Rhode Island Olivia Culpo Takes The Crown (VIDEO)

Miss USA Contestant Honors 'Pretty Woman'

What movie comes to mind when thinking of films that portray women in a positive way? Would it perhaps be "Pretty Woman"? That was the unexpected answer from Miss Ohio Audrey Bolte on the "2012 Miss USA Pageant" (Sun., 9 p.m. ET on NBC). She was inspired that Julia Roberts' prostitute character "came out on top and she didn’t let anybody stay in her path."

Miss Ohio didn't come out on top to win the competition; that honor went to Olivia Culpo, a 20-year-old cellist from Rhode Island. She will go on to represent the United States in the Miss Universe pageant.

Culpo didn't get a chance to play her instrument during the telecast since there was no talent portion. The contestants strutted the stage during an evening gown competition, and in their bikinis. They were joined on stage by Cobra Starship during the bikini round, and Akon during the evening gown presentations. Rounding out the competition was the aforementioned question-and-answer session.

During that portion of the competition, Culpo was asked her stance on allowing transgender competitors, and she came out in support of the decision. The issue made headlines when a transgender woman was first barred from competing in Canada, before being allowed and nearly winning.
