Most entrepreneurs are talking about how the hustle and grind, long hours of work, little or no sleep, several cups of coffee and weekend hijacked by even more work seem to be the order of the day. But is that all there is to life? If the hustle is so good then why is it everything but attractive? Why does the hustle have to seem like slavery?

The reason why the hustle creates such a negative picture is because a majority of people have got the whole concept of hustling upside down. Your heart feels your hustle, not the other way round.

Hard work without the right intentions in place, without a goal or purpose greater than yourself, only amounts to mental and physical strain. And in the end you have nothing to show for it.

But when your heart is in whatever you do, you'll succeed and no matter how hard you have to work it won't look like a strain but a necessary part of the journey. You'll feel more motivated to keep going.

Have a look at how your heart functions. Your heart is a powerful muscle pumping blood to every part of your body. The day it stops, you stop. As powerful as that part of your body is it is only about the size of your fist.

If something as small as your heart can keep you alive, how much more can your dream, purpose or belief keep you motivated to hustle? The key is to have your hustle centered on your heart. Here's how you can do it.

1.Get clear on what exactly you desire in life

"Go to your desire and don't hang around here." - Jack Kerouac, 'Big Sur'

Everyone has desire, but a desire that comes from the core of your being is the one that will keep pushing you to make it happen. It is normal to get caught up in the flow of life and not even give a single thought of what exactly you want out of life.

When you are clear about what exactly you desire, you'll be able to prioritize your day and activities in order of what will help you achieve your desire. Your desire will act as a litmus test to measure each action you want to take.

A desire that comes from your heart is what will justify your hustle. It will act as a driving force to get what you want. A good way to know what you desire is to ask yourself what gives you that burning hunger.

If you truly desire something then you will want it at any cost. You are willing to work hard for it and do everything it takes to make it yours. That is the energy that ought to fuel your hustle.

2.Have a purpose

"Find out who you are and do it with a purpose." - Dolly Parton

Once you are clear on your desire, the next step is to take a look at the bigger picture your why. Begin to question why you desire what you desire and how it will benefit you. Your purpose adds meaning to your desire and by extension your life too.

While desire makes you take action, purpose gives you the strength to carry on irrespective of the situation you face. With purpose you are able to endure the most difficult of all situations. If you have a purpose, the long hours at work won't matter and the sacrifices you have to make will not matter either.

This is because your purpose is centered on something greater than yourself. When you are committed to achieving your purpose you experience fulfillment in your life.

3.Be of service to others

"You'll get all you want in life, if you help enough people get what they want." - Zig Ziglar

Having a purpose lets you know that you're not the only one involved in the equation; others are too. The reason why you work so hard is because your joy comes from being able to ensure that those around you are happy.

You need to realize that your existence affects those around you. To put your heart in your hustle you need take reach out to others, build relationships with them and help them in the best way you can.

When you live your life trying to make the lives of those around you better, they help you one way or another. Being kind to a client, going the extra mile for them and listening to their needs attracts more clients to come your way. Along the lines through your hustle you achieve your goals. It's an endless cycle.

What's the essence of the hustle?

"Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked. There is no reason not to follow your heart." - Steve Jobs

Life is too short to let it pass you by. When you discover what you desire, back it up with a purpose and reach out to others your hustle will have more meaning.

Of course, it's not going to be a joy ride. You will have your fair share of ups and downs but with a renewed perspective of the true meaning of hustle, you'll be able to survive through it.

Hustle, in essence, is about working hard for something that gives you fulfillment and helps those around you.
