Brisk fall weather means that it's finally socially acceptable to hibernate! Opting to stay in when the weather is chilly doesn't have to mean ordering Chinese take-out and watching Scandal in your jammies (though, that is perfectly acceptable). If you want to turn up the heat, try these 5 ideas that will make a Saturday night in way better than going out on the town.
Hot Toddy
There are any number of ways to make this warm winter cocktail -- and they are all delightful -- but here is a basic version. Spoon a bit of honey or agave into the bottom of a mug, add your spirit of choice (whiskey, dark rum or brandy work great) and mix with a bit of fresh lemon juice. Top with piping hot tea.
Throw Blanket
A blanket seems like a no-brainer, right? Alas, digging out your old bedspread out of the hall closet just won't do the trick. Invest in an oversized, extra soft throw. Try something in a soft cable knit -- it will feel more luxurious than whatever you have thrown over the back of your couch right now.
Mood Lighting
Now is the time to turn off the lights and opt for candles. A cluster of different sized pillar and votive candles is perfect for a coffee table. Tea lights add a little glow to bathrooms and end tables. Bonus points if you have candles that give off a subtle fall scent. Just make sure you blow them out before you doze off or, ahem, move to the boudoir.
Music
Miley Cyrus can take a break tonight. Cold weather means old music: Etta James, Billie Holiday etc. If you have a record player, then bust out the vinyl. The crackle and fuzzy noise right when the needle hits the record is about as good as it gets on a November night.
Entertainment
Ignore the TV, put down your iPhone ... better yet, pretend there's a blackout! Take advantage of the cozy, warm and vintage vibe and play a game. A real game -- not Candy Crush. Backgammon, gin rummy or, if you're feeling adventurous, bridge are perfect winter weather options.
