“AIGUILLE D’OR” GRAND PRIX Awarded to Chronomètre Ferdinand Berthoud

Every year The Foundation of the Grand Pix d'Horlogerie de Genève (GPHG) judges and awards the “AIGUILLE D’OR” GRAND PRIX" to the finest creations in horology, which this year went to the Chronomètre Ferdinand Berthoud FB 1. The prize-giving ceremony was held at the Théâtre du Léman in Geneva November 10.

What Is The Foundation of the Grand Pix d'Horlogerie de Genève?

For those of you how don't know, the Foundation of the Grand Pix d'Horlogerie de Genève or (GPHG) was created in 2011 by five founding members, all of who are represented on the board of the foundation, bar the Edipresse group. The represented founder members are:

-The Republic and Canton of Geneva

-The City of Geneva

-The Musée International de l'Horlogerie/International Museum of Horology (MIH) in La Chaux-de-Fonds

-The Geneva Laboratory of Horology and Microengineering (Timelab)

-The Edipresse group

The principle purpose of the foundation is to promote Swiss Watch making values around the world, highlighting the art and craft of fine watchmaking, accuracy, reliability and craft.

Organised annually, the exhibition and prize giving is intended to salute the excellence of worldwide horological production. These annual event rewards the finest creations in the field and the most important players in the watchmaking industry.

Every November GPHG invite representatives of the elite watchmaking profession to the Grand Théâtre de Genève for a prize giving ceremony. Prior to his, during the months of October and November all the entries, the preselected and the soon to be winners take part in a travelling exhibition giving an international audience of watch aficionados, enthusiasts and connoisseurs to discover and admire the best Luxury Watches of the year. Visitors can also improve their knowledge of watchmaking through seminars and workshops.

This year there were 72 timepieces pre-selected by the jury, competing in 12 categories to win one of the 15 prizes.

So Who Was Judging?

The independent multi-disciplinary jury of the GPHG 2016 is composed of 28 experts from a wide range of disciplines, appointed by the committee.

This year the committee has been particularly proud there are more female members than previous years. Pointing out that as the jury is progressively renewed over the years, the gender balance has improved.

It has to be said, the list of judges is quite lengthy, but if you take a look through the list you can see the value each one brings to the event.
