Three photography art fairs converge this week at Fabrik Media’s Spring Art Week Los Angeles. The events will occur simultaneously throughout the week of April 18th through April 23rd.
Photo independent, now in its fourth year intersects with two other art fairs/festivals with an opening night party taking place on Friday, April 21st, 2017. All the events and the opening party will take place at the Reef in downtown LA.
EXPO Contemporary celebrates its 2nd year and will run in conjunction with Photo Independent, and the Festival of Photography. The weeklong festival, (The Los Angeles Festival of Photography) begins on April 18, and will run through April 23, while the other two weekend events, Photo Independent and EXPO Contemporary take place April 21st through April 23rd, 2017.
The Los Angeles Festival of Photography will feature lectures, workshops, exhibitions, gallery tours, and networking events. Director of Fabrik Media Chris Davies said, “I always wanted to invite the most compelling and iconic photographic artists of our time, and offer up a venue where they could interact together, teach workshops, and have meaningful lectures and dialog about their craft and photography.” He has done just that.
Davies added that he felt the two weekend fairs (Photo Independent and EXPO Contemporary) fulfill an important need that under-represented and independent artists have. Emerging and mid-career artists want to exhibit their work to receptive collectors and gain critical and curatorial attention. Most art fairs showcase galleries…leaving many talented artists by the wayside. Much of the success of Photo Independent was speaking for the under-represented and independent artists who did not have gallery representation. Here, artists can directly deal with collectors paying no gallery commissions and keep one hundred percent of the sales.
Davies continued, “We decided that if we put both fairs together and staged them at the same time and place, we could cross promote them to different audiences; audiences who appreciate all forms of contemporary art. We also felt that could generate a synergy between the fairs and drive up attendance.”
Featured events this year include Keynotes from curator and writer Charlotte Cotton, and Roger Ballen – who will also lead a three-day workshop on Fine Art Photography. Other workshops include ones with award-winning photographers Susan Burnstine, Karin Apollonia Müller, and Julia Dean. The Festival will also be conducting several Mobile Photography Workshops including David Ingraham: The iPhone Darkroom; Bob Weil: Creating Conceptual Art on Mobile Devices; and Nicki Fitz-Gerald: Life in Layers – Creative iPhone Artistry.
All events including the opening night art party on April 21st, (from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.) will take place at The Reef in DTLA, located at 1933 S. Broadway, Los Angeles, CA, 90007. http://www.the-reef.com/
