What makes for a great company retirement plan? To start: generous employer matches to a 401(k) plan, a phased-retirement program that lets employees work part-time and still stay eligible for health and other benefits, cash bonuses when the company does well.
One company with a nice retirement plan is oil and natural gas company ConocoPhillips. Since converting its defined benefit pension to a cash-balance plan, it deposits up to 9 percent of monthly pay into the accounts of employees, with the percentage tied to age and years of service.
