6-Year-Old Saves Grandfather's Life

This is why we teach children to use 911.

Zachary Powers, a 6-year-old from Harverhill, Mass., became a hero after his grandfather, Charles Henderson, collapsed and went into diabetic shock, according to CBS Boston. Not only did he recognize a problem, the young boy knew to dial 911 for help.

“My papa,” Zach told the operator, according to MSNBC. “He’s stuck and I can’t get him up. He’s all sweaty and stuff.”

Henderson, who has diabetes, had been out with his grandson all day, and at some point his blood sugar levels had plunged, reported CBS.

At first, Zack thought Henderson might be playing around, he realized the situation was not a game because his grandfather wasn't responding to him at all. WHDH reported that when paramedics arrived Zach helped further, telling the emergency officials that his grandfather used needles on a daily basis. This statement clued them them into the diabetes.

A conversation Zack had that morning may have led to his heroic actions. “His grandmother had talked to him about calling 911 and that morning I had said, ’You know Zack, if anything ever happens, you need to call 911,’” Henderson told CBS Boston.

It just goes to show how it's never too early to teach a child what to do in an emergency.
